A Historic Gem Serving the Community
Nestled along the serene shores of Mullett Lake, the Topinabee Public Library has been at the heart of its community for generations. Located at 1576 North Straits Highway, this charming library not only serves the residents of Mullett Township and part of Burt Township, but it also provides a unique blend of history and community spirit from a building that once welcomed trains, not books.
A Look Back in Time
Topinabee’s history dates back to 1881 when the Michigan Central Railroad had plans to turn this picturesque spot into a resort destination. H.H. Pike, originally from Vermont, saw the potential in this lakeside area and moved north. Pike wasn’t just ahead of his time—he was ahead of the tracks! He built a tavern and platted the community, hoping the railroad would pass through his new development on the west side of Mullett Lake. His vision became reality in 1881 when the railroad laid its tracks right through Pike’s property, fueling the growth of Topinabee.
The following year, the train depot was built, and a post office soon followed in 1882. Pike’s hotel became a hub for travelers, and the community expanded to include a boat launch, tavern, and even a casino. By 1886, daily trains rolled through Topinabee, cementing its place on the map.
The train depot, which stood as a gateway for travelers for decades, saw its final passenger train in 1958. After the railway was disestablished, the township bought the depot, transforming it into a historical museum and library. To this day, the library still houses a safe containing historic railroad records and photographs—a reminder of the community’s rich history.
The Library Today
While trains no longer stop at Topinabee, the library continues to be a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Offering free access to books, research materials, and computers, it plays a vital role in serving the community’s educational and recreational needs.
For young readers, there’s a dedicated children’s and young adult room complete with a computer just for kids and a wide selection of books. The library also keeps up with the times, offering eBooks for those who prefer to read on their mobile devices and a curated selection of summer reads, perfect for enjoying by the lake.
One of the most beloved traditions at the library is the Summer Story Time, held every Tuesday from June to August. Rain or shine, kids and families gather from 11:00 to 11:30 AM to hear stories read by guest readers—a fun way to keep the magic of books alive during the summer months.
The Topinabee Public Library is more than just a place to borrow books—it’s a cornerstone of the community, where history and modern services come together. Whether you’re looking to delve into the area’s past, pick up a beach read, or enjoy some family time at Summer Story Time, this historic library welcomes everyone with open arms.
